Any doubts that Jamaica ruled world sprinting were erased on another electric night in the Bird's Nest. It was a run that confirmed Usain Bolt as the face of the Games, and one that offered redemption - and a gold medal at last - to his team-mate Asafa Powell.
The history books will record that Nesta Carter and Michael Frater ran legs one and two, but the indelible memories came from Bolt and Powell on legs three and four. Bolt screamed around the bend like a train on rails, while Powell put down his head and blew away the mark set by two American teams, taking 0.3 seconds from the world record that they had shared. He was followed home by Bolt who had simply continued running after him, roaring him on. It was another watercooler moment from an unforgettable few days.

The shadow of state-sponsored steroid abuse looms over the achievements of the East German athletes. The accusations, fuelled by revelations, refuse to go away. But that’s not our concern here.

When all is said and done, this squad ran a remarkable race — Silke Gladisch, Sabine Rieger, Ingrid Auerswald and Marlies Gohr pounding the track to come home in 41.37.
