Stylish Cuban Dayron Robles went into his third outdoor race of the season high on confidence. During his indoor campaign earlier in the year he had hinted at his rich potential by coming within 0.03 of Colin Jackson’s 60m hurdles world record with a sparkling 7.33 in Dusseldorf.
Sure enough, in the Czech city of Ostrava, the 21-year-old made a scintillating start and held a commanding lead by the fourth hurdle. From that point he ate up the ground to initially stop the clock in 12.88 – a massive 0.33 ahead of second-placed Terrence Trammell of the USA.
For a nerve-jangling two minutes, the clock remained at 12.88 - the same time as the previous mark set by China’s Liu Xiang in 2006 - before it was finally adjusted to 12.87, sparking wild celebrations from Robles.
