The most dominant athlete of modern times began vaulting at the age of 11, and first broke the world record when he was 20, clearing 5.85m in May 1984. Over the next 10 years the Ukrainian improved the outdoor world record a staggering 16 times. He lost it to France’s Thierry Vigneron at the 1987 World Championships in Rome — but regained it a mere 10 minutes later!
Sestriere in the Alps is Europe’s highest track venue — 2035m above sea level — and despite a gusty wind, Bubka added 1cm to the world-record mark he’d set in Tokyo two years before.
Bubka also holds the indoor world record: 6.15m.
