Ethiopian distance legend Haile Gebrselassie missed out on lowering his world record in the Dubai Marathon earlier this month after picking up an injury watching the TV, spikesmag.com reports.

Gebrselassie landed the first prize of $250,000 for winning the race – but his time of 2:06:09 was more than two minutes shy of his world record mark.

The 36-year-old revealed he was troubled by a back injury picked up when relaxing for the night before the race created the problem.

“I was watching TV and I slipped into an awkward position, which meant I had to sleep in a different way,” said Gebrselassie. “I normally sleep on my stomach but I had to sleep on my back. When I woke up I found my disc was troublesome and in a bad way and I still cannot bend.”
