Trey Hardee: the guitar is my hero!

World decathlon champion Trey Hardee chats to spikesmag.com about his passion for playing the guitar…

“My mom got me into music by making me take piano lessons when I was in second or third grade. I understood music, so it was not too difficult for me to pick up.

I really enjoy making music and trying to figure it out. At college my parents got me my first guitar and for the last six years I’ve been goofing off with it. I started with a couple of electric guitars and now I have a stable of guitars! They are great things to have if you live by yourself.

I listen to Jimi Hendrix, blues and jazz. Currently, John Mayer is the closest thing we have to Hendrix and I love listening to him and watching what he does with the guitar. I’ve really got into Phoenix (a French alternative rock band) recently. I saw them in Austin and got my picture taken with them.

Am I any good with a guitar? I’d say I was average. I don’t spend enough time practising to be really good but when I hear a good song I’ll sit down and practise until I get it.

I enjoy playing I Don’t Need No Doctor by John Mayer and his Jimi Hendrix covers like The Wind Cries Mary and Bold As Love.

While I was in Germany I bought a cheap acoustic guitar ahead of the World Championships in Berlin. It gave me something to do in my free time other than watch German television. It also gave me a sense of home and a sense of normality. I played it at every spare moment I had.

People ask me if I would be in a rock band after I finish competing. I say ‘it is better than training’.”
