Dana's world - excellent!

US actor and stand-up comedian Dana Carvey is a former champion cross country
runner at Carlmont High School in Belmont, California. We caught up with the man
famous for playing Garth in the Nineties blockbuster Wayne’s World to talk track.

What were your first memories of track and field?

DC: From the infield at the LA Coliseum in 1965 watching Jim Ryan run a 3:55 mile.
I thought to myself, "Gee, he runs like my brother Scott, only slower."

How did you get into running?

DC: My brother Scott used to chase me and threaten me with various blunt objects,
so I ran, so help me God, I ran.

What standard did you reach?

DC: That's hard to say, but for a while my nickname was "The Champion".

Actually, I ran a 4:29 mile in high school, but mis-judged the distance and thought
I had another lap to go.

But my momma always said, "Don't cry over mis-judged distances."

Where did you get your talent from your mother or your father?

DC: I believe I got my talent from my brother, Scott, but that's impossible, because like
they say in Alabama, "he's just my brother, he ain't my daddy."

Why do you like watching track and field so much?

DC: World's greatest athletes going head-to-head. It's a pure sport.

Do you still run today?

DC: Yes. I ran 5 miles hard. During the last mile, pain became my friend.

Who is your favourite all-time athlete?

DC: Steve Prefontaine

What are your favourite events to watch and why?

DC: I like the marathon; I like watching human beings trying to make the impossible
look easy.

Where were you when Usain Bolt ran 9.58 in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin?

DC: In front of a 60-inch Pioneer elite HD television! I hand timed him from home,
and got him at 9.5 flat.

What is your favourite athletics memory?

DC: Running a 10-mile street loop at night with Scott at around 5:30 mile-pace.

He started to wheeze and I pulled ahead. Soon I heard nothing.

I looked over my left shoulder to see how far back he was and he sprinted by on my right
beating me by less than a metre, but after a few pints that meter didn't seem to matter
quite as much anymore.

What was the last track and field event you attended live?

DC: A local high school track meet where a young lad ran 9:09 for two miles. I thought to
myself, "If I were 35 years younger, I'd like to go toe-to-toe with that speedy teen." With all
due respect to the young man, I believe that I would have destroyed him.

Are you going to be in London watching the 2012 Olympic Games?

DC: I plan to be and I'd like to do some television commentating with my brother, Scott.

The British have the best track and field announcers in the world. It's time for the
Americans to step up.

I believe you had a family run-off a few years ago. How did you get on?

DC: Scott destroyed us all, as usual. My two older brothers weighed over 200 pounds
a piece, suffice it to say, I had my way with them.

Who is the best runner in the family?

DC: I guess you can say, Scott, but people who bet against me do so at their own peril.

Do you run to keep fit for your live stand up show?

DC: Yes. After a big laugh, I do wind sprints to celebrate.

What is the best athletics-related joke?

DC: Two Irish men run out of a bar...it could happen.

Do you every incorporate track and field into your routine?

DC: Yes. I have a ten-minute chunk about how the pole vault is the most sexual sport in
the world. The bit almost writes itself.

Which celebrity you know is the biggest athletics fan?

DC: I've heard that George Clooney is a huge fan of the women's javelin competition.
