Dai Greene on Ryan Giggs
British 400m hurdles World Championships finalist Dai Greene chats to spikesmag.com about his admiration for Manchester United and Wales footballer Ryan Giggs.
“I used to love playing football and as a former left-sided player who is not only Welsh but also a supporter of Man Utd it was always Ryan Giggs who I looked up to.
I
first recall watching him play on TV when I was a youngster and I used to love his skills. But as I grew older I got to appreciate not only his footballing skills but also the fact he never hit the tabloids for the bad things.
He is very professional and I appreciate and admire him as much for that than anything he does on the pitch.
He’s got different attributes today than when he was younger because he is not as fast as he once was. He’s kept in fantastic physical shape over the last 15 years and that has enabled him to play to such a high level for so long.
My favourite memory of him was when he scored that goal after a long run in the FA Cup semi-finals against Arsenal (in 1999).
I don’t know whether Ryan would make a decent 400m hurdles. He has one dominant leg in football (his left leg) and he might struggle to hurdle on the opposite leg. Maybe, he would make a very good 400m flat runner.
If I ever met him I’d like to say how great he is and how much I’ve appreciated watching him and how well he has performed week in week out.”
