Veronica Campbell Brown at the bowling alley

Campbell-Brown: From fast lane to bowling lane

Olympic 200m champion and reigning world 100m champion Veronica Campbell-Brown is one of the stars of the track but she also enjoys a trip down the bowling alley, as the Jamaican sprint star reveals to spikesmag.com.

“I first played ten-pin bowling when I was in Arkansas. It’s a relaxing game, and good fun. I like it.

We play a lot in the fall. I love going to Rack and Bowl in Florida. The lights get dimmed and we play to see who wins each round. I’m very competitive so I love to compete when I play. I’m not in a team or a league, I only play casually with friends – I still always want to win, though!

I often do win, but Omar, my husband (and Jamaican international sprinter) is normally better than me. I try not to be a sore loser but he knows not to rub it in when he wins.

It’s one of those games where you might have a really good night or you might have a really bad night, I guess there’s an element of luck involved. My best score is 198, but on average it’s usually 100 plus something.

I’m always really happy when I hit a strike – they’re really hard to get. They’re good because they give you a load of points.

The heavier balls are good because they do more damage. I think it’s important to find the right weight that doesn’t put too much pressure on your hard. You can pull your shoulder out if you bowl too hard.
