US hurdler Joanna Hayes has gone on holiday in a truck!

For my vacation/holiday I chose to spend my time traveling around the country in an 18-wheeler truck. Crazy? Maybe a little…but I am enjoying myself. I am visiting family and friends in different states and making a little money along the way by delivering truckloads to companies in different states and cities. I thought about flying somewhere and just relaxing and forgetting about the long, disappointing season but I decided that I have flown way too much already this year.

I started my trip on 26 September in Los Angeles and drove through Arizona (where we stopped to take a look at the petrified forest), New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, and finally Atlanta.
I stayed in Atlanta for a couple days and just hung out with a friend. Now, I am in Charlotte with my extended family. I have a bunch of cousins here that I have not seen since 2001! I am really enjoying myself just eating, laughing, and catching up with them. I plan to hit the road once again and head north east to see more family in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Riding in a big truck is fun but it can also be difficult.  When I try to walk around or write something down the bumps in the road make it so hard! Yes, I can walk around because the truck is 6 ft by 6 ft long inside the cab. It has bunk beds, one of which turns into a table with a seat on each side. There is a small refrigerator and a bunch of storage space, so, I basically live there.

It is definitely different from being at home especially because I have to use the bathroom and take showers in truck stops. I am very picky though; I refuse to take showers in old truck stops. The showers must be new and in great condition for me to set foot in them! Of course I keep my shower shoes on! I barely get to sleep because we are driving all night and I stay up to keep my boyfriend awake by talking and singing. I think it’s mostly the singing that keeps him awake, because singing is not one of my talents. I know it does not sound very fun, but trust me it is and I am loving it out here. There is so much to see along the highways; the trees, lakes, and mountains are so beautiful.

I am on day eight of my trip and I think I will be out for at least 10 more days.  I will keep you posted of my travels… Until next time!
